Chicago Bear Quarterback Competition

This NFL offseason has been an eventful one. Never in my lifetime has there been a more headline filled NFL offseason especially with big name Quarterbacks. With the current situation the world is in today with the global COVID-19 pandemic, there isn’t much going on especially in the sports world, but for football fans this Spring has been plenty eventful. The big news of today is not dealing with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, or with the draft which is still scheduled to occur this month. Today the top story is with the Chicago Bears.

This morning the Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Pace, and Head Coach Matt Nagy held the Bears Free Agency Press Conference Call. Both the Coach and GM conveyed the same sentiment about the Quarterback room. In a recent trade agreement with the Jacksonville Jaguars the Chicago Bears acquired QB Nick Foles. While QB Mitchell Trubisky who the Bears, drafted in the same draft class as the reigning Superbowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, as well as Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson. It is obvious that drafting Trubisky was a bad move, with the other Quarterbacks falling to other teams. This season the Bears have the option to either pick up the 5th year option on Trubisky's rookie contract otherwise he could be slated to become a free agent next season. On the subject of who will be the Bears' starting QB this season both Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy claimed it will be a open competition.

Foles who is most commonly known for his time with the Philadelphia Eagles, which included the Superbowl LII win over the New England Patriots. However Foles is just coming off a season with the Jacksonville Jaguars which saw him lose the starting QB position to Rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew.

It will be interesting to see how this QB competition works out in Chicago, but as a Bears Fan myself, I’m excited and as long as the team improves through this I’ll be happy. It will be interesting to see how much of a competition it really is between the two especially being that NFL teams likely won’t be allowed to meet up for offseason practices nearly as much as normal. Personally I just hope to see the Bears make some more moves this month (through free agency, and the NFL draft) to try and acquire help for the OL. With the recent retirement of Pro Bowl Lineman Kyle Long as well as an overall decline in play in Chicago the past season, that remains my personal top concern leading into this upcoming season.
